Second album from this Mexican band, after 7 years of silence, with outstanding individuality combined to create a mixture of Avant Jazz Rock with Latin, Afrocuban and some Crimsonian taste!
Another nice group has appeared! Mantis Atea, a quartet of jazz rock from Mexico, with a new line up and a really impressive second studio album, Buenavista, that combines a really wide number of influences that go from Canterbury or John Zorn to traditional Mexican music and Afrocuban rhythms. The musical journey on Buenavista, starts with a relatively gentle jazz rock sound that retains the mysterious atmosphere reminiscent of National Health, while having the heavyness and avant-garde elements heard on some R.i.O. bands. However, in the second half of the album, the intensity increases suddenly, and you can hear a rather intense ensemble in which the free-spirited Latin percussion flies along with an aggressive guitar influenced by Fripp's playing in Red, or the heavy Crimsonian sound from the 00's.
You definetively should try this album is you're into Jazz Rock Fusion, R.i.O. or King Crimson. (Review by Kakehashi Records, Japan)
